Linden (GM)
Located in Linden, New Jersey, the plant operated from 1937 to 2005 and made cars, trucks and SUVs for various GM automotive divisions. Between 1937 and 1941 over three hundred thousand autos left the plant.
As the possibility of being drawn into the war effort became more likely, the U.S. government ordered production slowdowns to auto companies throughout the nation. This slowdown would jepoardize the workforce at the Linden plant. Linden Management reached out to aircraft producers in an effort to gain subcontracting work building aircraft wings. After several rejections, GM officials headed to Washington to speak with the Army and after speaking with the Army also had an opportunity to speak with the Navy, which ultimately resulted in an agreement between GM and Grumman Aircraft to build both the P-47 and the F4F "Wildcat". All of this made perfect sense, especially considering the proximity to Linden Airport.
On January 21, 1942, a new GM division was born - Eastern Aircraft. The Linden assembly plant was one of five East Coast plants to become part of the new division.
