Cost Of Living 1982
Up until the Buick Regal became an item on the NASCAR circuit in the early 80’s, Buick had a reputation as a sedan/coupe targeting a more mature market. The idea that they might delve into the muscle car arena was unimaginable. Then
General Manager, Ed Mertz, had been handed a directive to make Buick a luxury car just below Cadillac. He was less than warm to the idea.
Nevertheless, the project continued. In mid-1982, the old 3.8-liter pushrod engine was brought into the modern era. As a 90-degree V-6, there was some unbalance, so the crankshaft was split to even the firing frequency and a balance shaft was added to smooth it out. Buick engineers also added Bosch port fuel injection, distributor-less ignition, cast aluminum rocker covers and digital EGR, so it became a very modern engine.
