Named Motor Trend's 1974 Car of the Year the Mustang II was available in a two– or three-door model and reached over 1.1 million sales over four years of production.
Initially introduced in 1964, the Mustang grew increasingly in size through the years until such time as the pony car customer voiced it’s opinion…”the Mustang was nearly an intermediate-size sedan”...sales declined.
In response to decreasing sales in the early 70’s, in September of 1973, Ford introduced the second generation Mustang II, coinciding with the oil embargo and increased fuel prices.
The original plan was for the downsized Mustang II to be based on the Ford Maverick platform, however, this idea was put to the side in favor of the smaller Ford Pinto platform.
1974 Inflation continues to spiral out of control around the world reaching 11.3% in the USA and 17.2% in the UK and the global recession deepens. The famous skeleton "Lucy" is discovered in Ethiopia which lived between 3.9 to 3 million years ago. After the findings of the Watergate Scandal Richard Nixon becomes the first US president forced to resign from office.
