Edison/Metuchen (Ford)
Located in Edison, New Jersey. It was located at 939 U.S. Route 1 and occupied over 100 acres when it was open. Opened in 1948 and headed by the 28-year-old grandson of Henry Ford, the 1 million square-foot plant was part of Ford's major postwar expansion, producing 6,853,228 vehicles during its operations and was closed in 2004.
In the 60's the plant built the Ford Mustang and Falcon, the Mercury Comet; in the early 70's the plant switched to producing the Ford Pinto and Mercury Bobcat, the Escort and Lynx.
Production shifted to Ranger pickups in 1990, and produced 1.7 million Rangers along with the related Mazda B-Series.[1]
It was the first place outside Detroit that a Lincoln was ever built.
Only three locations built the Ford Mustang - New Jersey was one of them!
